Every home needs to have a space that’s designed for you to spend time with your family and just relax and enjoy it. A lot of the time, a home doesn’t have a room that’s meant for that purpose alone.
It’s possible to build one, though, and it doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated to do so. Additions could be pre-made offsite and then added to your home with a two or three-day-long construction project that won’t disturb your life.
A bump-out
The simplest way to install an addition is to make a bump-out. That means that you’ll just expand one of your rooms facing the garden. That’s done by tearing down one of the walls on that side and expanding the home outward. A sturdy steel frame needed to do so could be assembled beforehand which significantly shortens the construction time.
One of the best features of such an extension comes from the fact that you can use the addition like a sunroom by installing large window frames. This would make the family room bright and cheerful without having to decorate it to make it so.
Remodeling a basement
Most basements are not of that much use for the homeowner and if you want to expand your living space, one of the best ways to do so is to remodel the basement. If you don’t have enough room in the basement itself, you might need to expand it by tearing down the floor and digging in.
A few additional considerations need to be made as well because basements aren’t really made to be turned into living spaces. What you need to do is to make sure that you have enough light and that your basement is ventilated properly.
Adding another floor
This is probably the most expensive way to expand your home. It will be a large construction project since you’ll need to tear down the roof and add another floor before restoring the roof. However, it’s usually the biggest expansion you could make as well and it comes with a few additional benefits.
For instance, this way, you get to keep your floor plan and just double it for the next floor. Don’t forget that some portion of the downstairs space will be lost due to the stairs after the construction.
A garage
A garage is often a rather large space and it’s already connected to the home which makes it a good choice for remodeling and tuning into a room. This also has it’s downsides since it’s not what space is initially designed for and you’ll need to make a few large modifications.
These will mostly be about making the garage safe to use and making sure it has proper heating and ventilation. Most people also choose to replace the doors and install a more traditional entryway into the new family room, but this is optional. How difficult this project will depend on how big the garage is.
